This lot comprises a 1920 facsimile pamphlet and an original presentation letter from 1926. The quarto-sized pamphlet is titled A Letter from the Committee of the Association of New York to the Lord Mayor and Corporation of the City of London 5th May, 1775 and was printed under the direction of the Library Committee of the Corporation of London. The work is bound in brown paper wrappers with a string-tied spine. The interior contains high-quality photolithographic facsimiles of a three-page manuscript letter from the onset of the American Revolution, including a full page of signatures from prominent New Yorkers such as Isaac Roosevelt, Alexander McDougall, William Walton, and Samuel Broome. A colophon on the final leaf identifies the printer as Donald Macbeth at the Historic House, 17 Fleet Street, London.
The accompanying Typed Letter Signed (TLS) is dated March 1, 1926, and written on official Guildhall, London stationery with a circular embossed seal of the Corporation of London. The letter is addressed to J. H. Taylor, Esq. and bears the handwritten signature of a. m. mortier. The text of the letter presents the pamphlet as a memento of a recent visit by Mr. Taylor and his brother to discuss the game you both love so much. Given the context of the two brothers and their shared love of a specific game, the recipient is identified as the legendary five-time Open Championship golfer John Henry Taylor.
