British patent document, number 8816 of 1895, comprises the provisional and complete specifications for Improvements in Balls for Golf. The invention, submitted by Alexandre de Pont and Silvius de Pont of The Synthetic Ivory Company based in Lancaster, describes a golf ball constructed with a hard core sphere, such as gutta-percha or hard rubber, encased in a hardened impervious covering. Proposed materials for this outer shell include cellulose, coconut fiber, or artificial leather treated with castor oil varnish or collodion to increase durability and resistance to hacking. The document consists of three pages of printed text and one fold-out plate featuring two technical illustrations: Figure 1 showing a surface elevation view and Figure 2 showing a sectional view of the ball. The text provides the date of application as May 3, 1895, and the acceptance date as August 31, 1895. The publication was printed in London for Her Majesty's Stationery Office by Darling and Son, Ltd. Multiple pages bear a purple oval institutional stamp for the Patent Library Nottingham. The document is presented in an unbound state, having been removed from a larger collection.
