Father of The Open James Ogilvie Fairlie's Personal Signed 1839 'The Art Of Deer Stalking' 1st Ed by Scrope
Sourced directly from 'The Home of Golf' St Andrews, Scotland is The Open Championship principal organizer and 'Father of The Open Championship' James Ogilvie Fairlie's (1809-1870) personal signed 1839 hardcover copy of 'The Art of Deer Stalking.' Donning the Fairlie Coat of Arms illustrated bookplate on the inside cover, this author William Scrope reader was remarkably once in Ogilvie Fairlie's own library. Traveling across the top edge of the title page in steel tip fountain pen is James Ogilvie Fairlie's exceedingly rare and carefully formed signature signifying ownership by the man that forever changed the game of golf.
James Ogilvie Fairlie is to The Open Championship as Bobby Jones is to The Masters, but 74 years Joes' junior. It's Ogilvie Fairlie we have to thank for the oldest major championship in golf, with the 151st playing this weekend. Without him there likely would not be a Champion Golfer of the Year, Claret Jug, or perhaps even links-style course prominence on the PGA Tour schedule. Founding member of Prestwick Golf Club in 1851, Ogilvie Fairlie reached out to the two best players at each of 11 neighboring clubs in creation of the first Open Championship field vying for the prestigious 'Challenge Belt.' Those 11 clubs were: Aberdeen, Blackheath, Bruntsfield, Carnoustie Panmure, Dirleton Castle, Leven, Montrose, Musselburgh, North Berwick, Perth and St Andrews. Ogilvie Fairlie's playing partner the Earl of Eglinton, Archibald Montgomerie, donated the 'Challenge Belt' prize - giving notoriety to the then startup contest. This book remains in good condition, with overall slight aging not limited to foxing. This lot offers one of the most significant books in golf, without that book itself even being related to the game.
