Fuzzy Zoeller's Winning 1983 Las Vegas Pro-Celebrity Classic Tournament Used Signed Maxfli Golf Ball from Caddie w/ Badge
"Zoeller has a $135,000 smile," the Spokane Chronicle captioned an Associated Press photo superimposted behind a cash register in their September 19, 1983 newspaper. This lot is Fuzzy Zoeller's 1983 Las Vegas Pro-Celebrity Classic winning Maxfli DDH-100 Tour Ltd. It was the first year of the tournament which became famous as Tiger Woods' first win, and in its innagural playing had the largest purse on tour with Fuzzy taking home $135k. Fuzzy Zoeller's 5th PGA Tour win was a comfortable one, byt four strokes. The golf ball features black printed markings including a number 4, the Maxfli DDH name, and Pro 100 model designation.
As noted in the Mike Mazzeo's collection paragraph below, Zoeller taught Mazzeo how to hold onto the memorabilia from their time together associated/used in his on-course achievements in which Zoeller gifted Mazzeo. This is a great example, including the brittle piece of paper and caddy badge - Mazzeo's way of labeling this as THE ball. 'Vegas '83' Mazzeo wrote. "Mike Mazzeo was my regular caddie for 18 and a half years. Mike was family. I’m supposed to tell Mike he can’t come to Augusta?” Fuzzy Zoeller didn't often mince words, and this time was no exception when speaking to the Augusta Chronicle on his 1983 Masters caddy choice. It was a telling response, and the feeling was mutual. "I laughed everyday," Mazzeo answered without hesitation when asked what it was like to loop for Fuzzy, whom he still refers to as either "The Boss" or even "The Pied Piper of Golf" three decades later. The relationship started in Zoeller's second year on tour in 1976 and lasted until 1995, with a year and a half break between 1980 and '82. Philadelphia-born, 'The Strategist' was "renown for his precision and expertise" as remembered by the CaddyBytes website in its review of the the games 'legendary caddies' for their "Haul" of Fame. Footage of the 1984 US Open at Winged Foot shows the young, visor clad Mazzeo in stride with Zoeller. The team out-dueled Greg Norman for that memorable feat and 7 others on the PGA Tour. Mazzeo labeled and kept everything his partner gave him, as Zoeller advised him to do saying it "might be worth something someday." Significant balls, flags, some gloves, bags with duck headcovers and even Zoeller's 1984 US Open winning, dated 'FUZ' clubs - Mazzeo's time capsule had it all. Finishing up his career, Mazzeo carried the bags of Curtis Strange, Mike Donald, Mike Reid, Ben Crane and more. Mazzeo then proved he wasn't done, notching a pair of 'W's' - one with both Reid and Crane.
