Gary Player's 1978 Hendrik Verwoerd Award for Service to the Republic of South Africa

It was Player's distinct honor to receive this recognition of the 1978 Hendrik Verwoerd Award for Service, one of the highest in South Africa. On the verso along with Gary Player's name reads Toekenning vir diens aan die Republiek van Suid-Afrika and has the year of presentation to Gary 1978. The award was in the name of the late Prime Minister.
South African Gary Player was victorious in more than 165 worldwide golf tournaments. The well-traveled larger-than-life global ambassador of the game was small in stature, often wearing all black while paving the way for international golf stars to come. The Big 3 member was the youngest to join the modern-day career grand slam club after the 1965 US Open, an exclusive club that he would be only the second member of at the time. Player's first of three Masters Tournament wins in 1961 would enter the record books also as the first international winner of the Augusta, Georgia contest. He would contest it a record 52 times, in a career that notched 9 major wins.
