Gene Sarazen's Personal 1959 PGA Diamond Studded Money Clip

As recounted by a past president and long-time member of the Illinois Section of the PGA, Gene Sarazen was awarded this diamond studded money clip as a token of appreciation for lending his time and expertise for teaching the 1933 Chicago Tribune Golf School. Twenty-seven local courses were included in the program that provided cost free instruction to grow the game - still a focus of the PGA of America. At Blue Mount Country Club that same year of 1933, across the Illinois/Wisconsin boarder line about an hour, Gene Sarazen claimed his third PGA Championship title. It was his third PGA Championship win and the first since going back-to-back at the major a decade ago and made Sarazen an easy choice for this goodwill teaching position. This dazzling diamond adorned 1959 Gene Sarazen awarded money clip, with both the royal blue trimmed PGA of America emblem in shallow relief and the hand engraving of 'Presented to Gene Sarazen' and 'Illinois', exudes class without question. It remains housed in the original hinged top jewelry case for both preservation and presentation. The Squire was the first Grand Slam champion, winning seven major championships and a member of the inaugural 1974 World Golf Hall of Fame class.

This story is corroborated by the typed letter of provenance on PGA of America letterhead written and signed by Mike Schoaf, Director of Media and Communications that accompanies this lot. Additional supporting paperwork includes the eminent golf signature collector Mark Emerson's letter of authenticity and provenance detailing his relationship with the Gene Sarazen heirs and mention that 'Mr. Sarazen was quite a nostalgic collector himself.'
