Horton Smith's 1930 Daily Dispatch Southport Inv. Golf Championship Runner-Up Gold Medal @ Royal Birkdale
Horton Smith claimed this 1" diameter medal when he competed in the inaugural Southport, England Tournament in May 1930 it was sponsored by a Manchester newspaper, the Daily Dispatch. Contested at Royal Birkdale, Smith carded 289 to finish runner-up to Archie Compston at 285. The gold medal (hallmark on verso side) Smith claimed bears a striking resemblance in design to Open Championship medals awarded by the R & A. Smith was the sole American among the 300 entrants in the competition. In the final days two rounds Smith went off first in the morning playing in a gale of wind to a score of 72, which many in-person observers called the finest round of the Championship. 1. You must place your initial bids BEFORE extended bidding begins to bid on the item in extended bidding
2. During extended bidding, you are allowed to bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. All lots that are active in extended bidding will close at the same time, and those with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 9pm EST
