Joe Black's 1991 Ryder Cup Photo Album

Paging through this emerald green and gold photo album with you will see work from one of the finest lensman in golf history, a gentleman by the name of Frank Christian. Christian provided Joe Black with an eye-witness photographic account of the biennial international matches inside the ropes, shooting from many of the same vantage points that Black had that week while conducting tournament operations. These albums were presented to only players and special guests, such as Black, to commemorate the matches. It includes some pictures of Black amongst the players. Accomplished collegiate golfer at Hardin-Simmons University in Texas, Joe Black played a season on the PGA Tour in 1957. Shortly there after he would transition into the PGA Tournament Director. Black would later serve as President of PGA America, along with Ryder Cup Chairman for many years on behalf of the hosting organization. He was also proud manager for Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas, with a curated smattering of personal items from his Ryder Cup collection appropriately in this auction. Here is Joe Black's 1991 Ryder Cup Photo Album. The "War on the Shore" 1991 Ryder Cup matches saw the US take back the cup, 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. Hale Irwin got to play hero as Steve Pate, after suffering a rib injury earlier in the week, was unable to compete and his singles match was halved by rule. Irwin was taking on the fiery German Bernhard Langer, who missed a 6 foot putt that would have won his match and retained the Ryder Cup for Europe. Instead Irwin held on an halved the match, claiming the Ryder Cup for the US for the first time since 1983.
