This is a first edition of a specialized work on golf history, edited and compiled by the noted golf bibliographer Alastair J. Johnston. The book is an octavo volume bound in publisher's blue cloth with a gilt-stamped oval vignette on the front board depicting a historical golfer and gilt lettering on the spine. It is housed in a matching blue cloth-covered slipcase. The title page features a handwritten presentation inscription in blue ink: To David, I appreciate your interest in 'The Clapcott Papers' Sincerely Alastair J Johnston October, 1991. Included with the volume is a two-page typed biographical profile of the subject titled CHARLES BLACKSTONE CLAPCOTT. This supplement is dated March 1986 from Cleveland, Ohio, and is signed by Alastair J. Johnston. The text contains scholarly research and commentaries on the rules of golf and the history of prominent clubs such as The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The work represents a compilation of the research papers of Charles Blackstone Clapcott, a British judge and amateur golfer whose work was undertaken primarily after his retirement from public service.
