1962 US Open at Oakmont Marshall Badge #117 PSA Grade 7 #87044019
The newly turned pro Jack Nicklaus and hometown favorite Arnold Palmer batted it out in a playoff, with Jack emerging in the seemingly David over Goliath result at that time. The appropriate and historic setting of Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania was the main stage for two leading actors who at the time were opposite in nearly every way.
Marshall Badge #117 is offered here, once used through the entirety of the tournament that launched a lifelong friendly rivalry between Nicklaus and Palmer. Color is strong, with the red Oakmont squirrel front and center inside the matching outer circle. PSA has only recently been able to grade and encapsulate badges with their new casing side and thickness that is on display here.
The ticket/badge category had been underappreciated in the sports memorabilia industry for many years, until a surge in prices only a couple years back seemingly caught up to its value. The means of admission to the entire historical event remains a challenge, with this aesthetically pleasing badge being your opportunity to own just that. It is encapsulated by PSA and graded Near Mint 7 for valuation, preservation and presentation.
