Advertising Fan From 1904 With Woman Golfer
The front of this fan features a woman golfer looking behind her while resting a golf club on her shoulder. She is carrying a striped decorated bag with 5 wood shaft golf clubs. A pin flag for the 8th hole appears beside her. The rear of the flag states “Use this fan to keep cool” and has advertising for the H. L. Short & Co. Clothiers in Norwich, New York. The golfer I portrayed on the fan is in the style of A “Gibson” girl. The Gibson Girl was the personification of the feminine ideal of physical attractiveness as portrayed by the pen-and-ink illustrations of artist Charles Dana Gibson.
