1940 Amateur Public Links Contestant Badge - Detroit #118


Organized by the United States Golf Association this event was a Championship for golfers who played on public courses, as members of private clubs were not permitted to participate. The 1940 event which had 2,602 entrants was the 19th edition in the yearly series. It was founded in 1922 by James Standish Jr. a top amateur player from Michigan. The 1940 event marked the first time the event was staged in Standish's hometown of Detroit when it was contested at Rackham Golf Course with Michael Dietz claiming the Championship 8 and 6.Employing the design which the United States Golf Association would use on it's Championship Contestants badges from the early 1930's until 1959. This example displays a top condition front with nary a scratch to the white and orange enamel facing which reads, "CONTESTANT" and "AMATEUR PUBLIC LINKS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP" "DETROIT" "1940". Also boldly present on the front of this gem is embossed "USGA" for the sanctioning United States Golf Association which oversaw this event. Stamped on the reverse of the pin is "ROBBINS CO ATTLEBORO" its manufacturer. Pin has dimensions of 1 1/4" x 1 3/8"
