1952 British Amateur Championship Runner-Up Silver Medal Awarded to Frank Stranahan

The Amateur Championship in 1952 was staged at the birthplace of Open competitions in the United Kingdom, Prestwick Golf Club-the legendary Scottish links course. Prestwick with its hard fairways and small tricky greens was a true test of golf for the week-long match play battle of the finest amateur golfers from around the world. Frank Stranahan was trying to become the first American to snar the title three times. He and Harvie Ward each curled victourously through their first five matches to setup the all-American 36 hole final match for the Championship. The 26-year-old Ward rallied from an early deficit, thanks to his 17-hole streak of sub-par golf and Stranahan's errant driver which saw him miss 23 fairways. This combination led to a 6 and 5 win for Ward over Stranahan. At the awards presentation ceremony Ward humbly summed up the match, "I realize I was very lucky today, Frank wasn't playing his best game. He is the greatest amateur golfer in the United States." In Stranahan, Prestwick claimed another victim as it has been doing in its exacting links style ever since the mid 1800's. In defeat however, Stranahan had come ever so close to claiming again the first, of what was still considered at the time, "Major" of the year on the golf circuit. For his runnerup finish Stranahan received from the R&A this elegant metal of accomplishment carrying the inscription:
