Alexander Smith Memorial Sterling Trophy Given to the 36-hole Medalist in PGA Stroke Play Qualifier 1930-55


Spectacular golf heirloom with Original Traveling Box, Engraved "Professional Golfers Association Of America Veterans Memorium Alex Smith 1930", Other Side "PGA Qualifying Rounds Low Score". 18" tall with a 10" top diameter (16" from handle to handle), bottom diameter is 7 1/2". Fine Condition, Some Tarnish And Wear To Finish. Featuring Label Addressed to PGA World Golf Hall Of Fame And Hand Written "Alex Smith," Note; This trophy was given to the medalist in the 36-hole stroke play qualifier. It was discontinued after the PGA Championship changed to stroke play in 1958. Alex Smith was a two time United States Open champion with wins in 1906 and 1910. He was much admired as an instructor. His pupils included Glenna Collett and Jerome Travers. With his noted work in the game as a player and instructor. It was easy to see how the PGA named this highly coveted trophy in Smith's honor on his passing April 20, 1930. With custom traveling Box that measures 15 1/2" x 13" x 19". Underside of trophy bears silversmiths hallmark, "STERLING" and "3748". A Who's Who of the greatest golfers of this era hoisted this very trophy including Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead and Ben Hogan. One of the most significant and desirable items we can recall having seen. A letter of authenticity from PGA Historian Emeritus Bob Denney will accompany this lot.

2. During extended bidding, you are allowed to bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. All lots that are active in extended bidding will close at the same time, and those with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 9pm EST
