John Mahaffey 1978 PGA Championship at Oakmont CC Winning Scorecards
In this lot lies the used scorecards from Oakmont Country's 1978 PGA Champion John Mahaffey's four rounds en-route to hoisting the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday, August 5, 1978 and capture his signature major victory after two close calls at the US Open. Nearly 43 years after the final putt was rolled in at the historic Pennsylvania golf club, this group of significant ephemera has been made available for public consumption for the first time. Marked, signed and carried by the likes of fellow major-winners Tom Watson and Jerry Pate, each shows numerous signs of round usage not excluding pencil markings, slight paper loss and adhesive remnants from the PGA of America's display. After holding the 54 hole lead, Tom Watson shot a 73 on Sunday to open the door for the other competitors. Jerry Pate had his chance on the final day, lipping out a 4 foot putt for par on the 72nd hole. The 60th playing of the PGA Championship at Oakmont Country Club saw 'Hogan's Boy' Texan John Mahaffey notch his statement win a sudden-death playoff over Pate and Watson once the dust settled. Each scorecard has multiple sets of initials written on the top right corner, likely those of tournament scoring officials after inspecting and approving the scores. John Mahaffey's final three rounds of 67, 68 and 66 proved his closing ability, starting the final round in 5th place. Included with these is a Framed display accompanying the scorecards and measuring 13 1/2" x 1 3/4" x 34 1/4.

Place your bids now as this auction will end at 9:00pm ET Sunday, February 14th with EXTENDED BIDDING to follow. When placing INITIAL bid, you must agree to the terms BEFORE confirming your bid. All items that have received multiple bids in the auction will remain open until no items have received a bid within a 15 minute time period (at 10pm EST, the countdown clock will be adjusted to a 5 minute interval). Place your bids now!
1. You must place your initial bids BEFORE extended bidding begins to bid on the item in extended bidding
2. During extended bidding, you are allowed to bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. All lots that are active in extended bidding will close at the same time, and those with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 9pm EST
**If extended bidding goes pass midnight ET, The Golf Auction reserves the right to close the auction at any time. We recommend bidders place their maximum bids prior to that time. Thank you
