Steve Jones Personal 1996 US Open Sterling Silver Trophy Won At Oakland Hills

Steve Jones in his career defining moment posted a record setting four round score of 278 to claim a one stroke win over top PGA rivals Tom Lehman and Davis Love in the 1996 U.S. Open Championship. What made this performance even more outstanding was that it occurred over the tight and long Oakland Hills fairways one of the most feared courses in the world, one that Ben Hogan dubbed "the Monster". The score of 278 at Oakland Hills was a record low for the eight U.S.G.A. men's professional championship events contested there (six U.S. Opens and two U.S. Senior Opens). This is the award from that triumph which Jones has proudly displayed in his home until consigning it to The Golf Auction this month. The design of the personal trophy is identical to the perpetual trophy which winners of The U.S. Open get to keep for a year after their championship, the only difference is scale (90% of size). The trophy offered here measures twenty-two inches (22") in height, 10 1/2" wide from handle to handle, and a base diameter of 6 5/8". The lid of the trophy is topped by a winged, female figure known as Victoria, the Goddess of Victory, who raises a wreath aloft with one of her hands. This grandest of awards was produced for and purchased by Steve Jones from The United States Golf Associations official silversmith, a tradition that is carried on to this day by prestige English silver craftsman Nicholas Winton, to permanently commemorate his win at the 1996 U.S. Open. Please note that this was not produced by the current silversmith Nick Winton. An intricately engraved sterling silver (hallmark clearly stamped on award) masterpiece of design which records the earliest victors of The Championship dating to 1895 through Jones' win in 1996 on the body of the trophy.

Very few player Major trophies have ever made it into the golf collecting hobby, and we needn't expound further on the significance of the United States oldest professional championship. Ownership of this elite trophy will elevate the collector into a rarefied realm, and make him the curator of a relic that is sure to be treasured and revered for ages to come. This opportunity comes with the highest of provenance as Steve Jones provides a photo with this award and his letter of authenticity to our winning bidder.

**THE STEVE JONES COLLECTION - 8x PGA Winner & 1996 U.S. Open Champion**

We at The Golf Auction appreciate the opportunity to partner with the highly respected PGA Touring Professional Steve Jones in the auctioning of items from his collection of player badges, clubs, championship medals and mementos assembled over a PGA career which began in 1982 and spanned over the next almost 40 seasons on the regular and Champions Tours. This great run of golf at its highest level saw Jones five times finish in the yearly Top 40 of PGA earnings. His long successful career was highlighted by eight PGA Tour wins claimed at some of the most esteemed of Tour events which included the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, Canadian Open and of course his Major triumph at the 1996 United States Open. This victory which came at the famed, for its difficulty of play, Oakland Hills. This triumph saw Jones post a record setting winning score of 278. This championship winning score remains to this day the the lowest total posted at any of the six U.S. Open's and two Senior U.S. Open's held at the course Ben Hogan would call "The Monster" (with members of the champions at Oakland Hills club besides Jones including Hall of Famers Ralph Guldahl, Hogan, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus). Following the 1996 golf season, Jones also had the esteemed honor of being named the recipient of the Ben Hogan Award which is given annually by the Golf Writers Association of America to an individual who has continued to be active in golf despite a physical handicap or serious illness.
