1921 OPEN Championship at St. Andrews Winner's Gold Medal Won by Jock Hutchison - First American
Champions medals are one of the most desired golf memorabilia items in the industry. The chances of getting a current PGA’s player winners medal from a player is very unlikely. The current generation of players and the generation before them have made so much money that it is unlikely they would ever part with such an item. This lot contains a medal of historical significance, Jock Hutchison was the first American to win the British Open. British Open medals have consistently sold for the most at auction, normally selling in the low six figures. This medal is from a World Golf Hall of Famer who won two majors, the 1920 PGA Championship and the 1921 British Open which this lot contains the winners medal. Jock was born in St Andrews Scotland , but moved to the United States and became a US citizen in 1920. Jock also won the 1937 Senior PGA Championship that was contested at Augusta National in Augusta Ga. That medal is also being presented in this auction, as another lot, please check it out. That win helped endear Augusta fans and membership to him and he became one of the initial honorary starters at the Masters tournament.
This medal measures 1 11/16" and weighs 1.76 ounces (50 grams) and is inscribed “Winner British Open Championship Jock Hutchison June” on the back and “Open Championship 1921” on the front. This medal was previously on display at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St Augustine Florida. It is being auctioned off as part of the PGA reach collection.
