Bobby Jones Signed 1929 US Open Putt Framed Display to Harold Sargent - Jack Sargent Collection

The game of golf was on the top of everyone's mind, with Bobby Jones on the brink of making history and put the world of sport on notice. National pop culture magazine 'Esquire' was no exception, commissioning artist Robert Fawcett to recreate Bobby Jones' tying putt at Winged Foot that day on June 29, 1929. This matted and framed example of that print is signed by the subject Bobby Jones himself for good friend Harold Sargent, who Jones would handpick for Atlantic Athletic Club's head professional position. How's that for a vote of confidence? The depicted tournament here was contested at a historic venue in Winged Foot Golf Club. Bobby Jones opened with a first round 69, with his 31 on the back nine outstanding in all regards. At the end of four rounds of play Jones remained tied with Al Espinosa. The 36-hole playoff the next day saw Jones put a staggering 23 stroke exclamation point win in posting his third US Open Championship. As outstanding as Jones' performance was during the '29 Championship, this exquisitely signed Bobby Jones signed print from that victory takes greatness to another level. Matted alongside the watercolor is O.B. Keeler's reporting on the tournament that would proceed the 1930 Grand Slam, coined the "impregnable quadrilateral." 33 1/4" x 19 1/4"

The Sargent Family Collection

With the long, storied history of the game of golf and the Professional Golfer's Association firsts in th year of 1958 were not very common. George and Harold Sargent would become the first father-son to hold the gavel as President of the PGA of America. It wasn't the first time Harold followed in his father's footsteps. Atlanta native and member of golf royalty Bobby Jones handpicked George Sargent as the Head Golf Professional in 1932 at the Atlanta Athletic Club, making the appointing a family affair 15 years later with Jones' pick of son Harold for head pro at East Lake Golf Club.

Englishman George Sargent was introduced to a gentleman by the name of Harry Vardon at the nearby Ganton Golf Club in 1899, five years after taking up the sport at age twelve. After success playing professional golf beginning in 1901, he soon moved to Canada and met his wife Margaret whom of which he had 11 children with. The year 1909 Sargent would however cement his name in golf's history books, winning the 1909 US Open while setting a new tournament scoring record with his 290 strokes over the 72 holes. Three years later he continued his head club professional career at the illustrious clubs of Scioto in Ohio, followed by Interlachen, Chevy Chase and of course East Lake Country Club. Harold stayed in the family business of golf his whole career, with the honor of the longest serving member of the rules committee for The Masters Tournament. Relics from The Sargent Family Collection are proudly presented in this auction, many from the close ties of prominent golfers and friends including Bobby Jones.
