Denny Shute Personal Used 1936 PGA Championship Winning Putter
It was over two decades ago when the PGA of America contacted their past Champions for assistance in showcasing their accomplishments in capturing the Rodman Wanamaker Trophy. One of those items is presented here in the Denny Shute personal used 1936 PGA Championship winning putter. When the PGA began their next chapter of advancing the PGA’s legacy, they decided to follow a different path where items such as this one would longer be presented, and the process of contacting all living PGA Champions an descendants began. We here at The Golf Auction are please that the returned putter has found it's way to our 2021 September Auction. The Golf Auction has worked side by side and raised funds and awareness for PGA REACH for the last two plus years. Their charitable foundation positively impacts the lives of youth, Veterans and diverse populations by enabling access to PGA Professionals, PGA Sections and the game of golf. The putter has been removed from it's previous cherry wood display, where a plate had stated "Denny Shute outlasted long-hitting Jimmy Thomson 3 and 2 in the final at Pinehurst's famous No. 2 course. Both Thomson and Shute needed tough wins over notable opponents to get to the final. Shute had to beat two-time Masters Champion Horton Smith, and Thomson defeated Henry Picard in the third round and Craig Wood in the semifinals. Although outdriven by as much as 60 yards in the final match, Shute maintained a slight lead throughout the day and ended the tournament with a spectacular eagle on the 34th green for victory". Originating from the family as both Dave and Larry Shute have both unfortunately passed away.
