1902 The Country Club Handicap vs Bogey Sterling Silver Trophy Won by USGA Record Holder Anita Phipps


USGA record holder Anita Phipps was awarded an early exquisite golf trophy from The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts - host of the 2022 US Open along with three others before it. In the 1903 The Country Club membership book (which is also consigned to the TGA 2022 US Open auction as well), on page 48 Benjamin Phipps is listed as a member and was likely the father of the trophy winner Anita Phipps.

Anita Phipps was an accomplished player. She played in eight USGA Women’s Championships (1902, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908,1909 and 1911). Twice going to the semi-finals. She is also a USGA record holder. Results sheets from USGA yearbooks are attached to the trophy) She went to the semi-finals in 1907 where she lost to Helen Curtis 4 and 3. In her previous match in the quarter finals she set a USGA Women’s Amateur record which still holds today- going a record 21 holes in her 1 up defeat of Miss Sallie Ainslee.
