Circa 1904 John Henry Patented Centro Iron

Before you is a fine exemplar from the coveted patented club category - John Henry's centre-shafted smooth faced iron with unusual kidney shaped head circa 1904. This hand forged, warranted rustless iron Centro iron was patented by John Chave Luxmore Henry. His thought behind the design was to reduce the torque on a miss-hit shot, promote straighter shot flight paths and handle tough lies formidably. The principal features of the Horsburgh club are the centered shaft in addition to the unique cambered lines of the sole, face and top-line. Fellow clubmaker Thomas Horsburgh produced a similar designed club to this one. Parallel examples remain on display at Baberton Golf Club in Edinburgh. As depicted in the accompanying lot photos, this Centro iron example is in outstanding condition with strong stamping on either side of the kidney shaped head with light overall wear.

A nod to this club's scarcity concludes revered industry expert and author Jeff Ellis' review on p. 236 of The Clubmaker's Art: "The author has seen only three Centro woods and five Centro irons. The putter turns up from time to time." It surely deserves inclusion to the finest turn-of-the-century and patent club collections. 36 1/2"
