1949 TIME Magazine Featuring Vibrant Ben Hogan Cover - January 10th
The cover of Time Magazine in the 1940's was most often reserved for world leaders and royalty. Ben Hogan fit neither when he received the honor for the January 10, 1949 issue. He had risen to golf royalty in 1948 winning both the US Open and PGA championships and this made him magazine worthy when Time Magazine showed up at Riviera C.C. to cover his appearance at the PGA stop that January. Four pages were dedicated to him in the magazine including a time lapse sequence of his swing which had already reached mythic proportions. Within a month of this cover, his game at the height of success would come to a quick halt on a Texas highway in a near-fatal automobile accident.
