Arnold Palmer & Frank Stranahan at North South Amateur Photo - 4/26/49
The King and the Toledo Strongman are photographed together at Pinehurst for the 1949 North & South Amateur Championship, a tournament which Stranahan would end up winning. Considered the greatest amateur player of his era, Frank played in 8 consecutive OPEN Championships (1947-1954) and claimed four of the first five Silver Medals. This was during a post war time period where many top American players did not compete as often as we see today. When Arnie claimed his Claret Jugs in 1961 & 1962, it confirmed the Americans were here to stay. A mere five years later, Arnie & Frank has a discussion about Frank turning professional. Palmer said of Stranahan during the 1954 US Amateur Championship: "He told me that if he didn't win in Detroit, he was going to turn pro. As it turned out, I played him in the fifth round. I won 3&1 and sure enough, Stranny turned pro the next day"
