Mickey Wright Match Used Wilson Staff Full Size Golf Bag
Proudly presented in this lot is Mickey Wright's Wilson Staff match-used white and red golf bag with her name running up the main pocket in black script. Perhaps this classic 1980's style looks familiar to you, as it was shared throughout the Wilson Staff Team that included Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, and Gene Sarazen for Starters (pun intended) and not far off of Arnold Palmer's club bag decades before that. Another example of Mickey Wright's that is almost identical is exhibited at the USGA Golf Museum in Far Hills, New Jersey. Detailing and customization by Wilson for their star didn't stop at the front and back - pick it up and look at the bottom and you will know what we mean. This example has remained well preserved, with very slight wear present.
Considered by many historians and fellow golfers to be the Greatest Female Golfer of All-Time (GOAT), Mickey was the winner of 13 Major Championships, 69 additional LPGA Tour wins, and declared to have by Ben Hogan the best golf swing he ever saw, man or woman! Wright won four (4) U.S. Women’s Opens and four (4) LPGA Championships in her career. This domination was so complete that the Associated Press named her the Female Athlete of the Year in both 1963 and 1964. The World Golf Hall of Famer notched the Women's career grand slam on the way to her 13 Major titles (second all-time to Patty Berg). She retired at the young age of 34 in 1969 due to her aversion to flying and a foot issue only to stage a comeback in 1973 when she won the Dinah Shore before retiring once and for all.
