Mike Donald's 1990 US Open Runner-Up Tournament Used MacGregor Eye-O-Matic Tourney Driver & (8) Wilson Staff Irons
This collection consists of nine vintage golf clubs, featuring one wooden driver and a partial set of eight irons used by Mike Donald to finish 2nd in the 1990 U.S. Open at Medinah. The driver is a MacGregor Eye-O-Matic Tourney 1-wood with a wooden head and a multi-colored face insert. The brass sole plate and head bears the stamps Oil Hardened, Rec. No. M85W, MacGregor, Eye-O-Matic, and Tourney. A triangular logo containing the letters MG is present on the crown. The set of eight Wilson Staff irons includes clubs numbered 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and a J.P. wedge, with the 6-iron missing. The backs of the numbered irons are marked with Staff, R 8 400, and the Wilson W/S shield logo. The wedge is marked Staff, Tour Blade, and J.P. (Joe Phillips). Each iron is stamped with Wilson and its respective club number on the sole. All clubs are fitted with chrome-plated steel shafts and feature black and green patterned Swing Rite grips. Mike lost to Hale Irwin on the 91st hole after both tied in an 18 hole playoff on Monday. Had Donald won, these clubs would be in the USGA museum and not available for sale. Earning a moniker such as 'Iron Mike' in the game of golf isn't easy. Mike Donald did during the 1980's and early 1990's, notching nearly 300 made cuts on a PGA Tour - often in void of the glitz and glam of the game's current pro climate. Some will recognize his name from being a regular on the early 1990's PGA Tour Pro Set trading card checklists - even twice in 1991, earning a 'Statistical Leader' card for his 401 birdies the season prior. 1990 would be a year in which Donald would find himself under the brightest of lights, matching a 50 year old record with "the round of his life" 64 (Lloyd Mangrum) to lead The Masters after Thursday - en route to falling back in the pack for 47th. Just months later he would be on the wrong end of the US Open duel with Hale Irwin in the toughest test of golf. These major trials and tribulations were however sandwiched with great success. Donald earned the dually as difficult "PGA Tour Winner" title on July 16, 1989 when he closed the deal at the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic in Playoff win over Tim Simpson and Hal Sutton. Donald also earned winner's medals at the 1984 JCPenney Mixed Team Classic with Vicki Alvarez and the 1990 Sazale Classic with Fred Couples.
