Mike Donald's US Open & PGA Championship Badges and Contestant Bag Tags
Here is an assortment of four professional golf memorabilia items associated with PGA Tour professional Mike Donald. The collection includes two contestant bag tags, and two tournament access badges. The first item is a plastic bag tag badge for the 1981 PGA Championship held at the Atlanta Athletic Club given to Mike. The second item is a round plastic contestant bag tag from the 93rd U.S. Open Championship, held June 17-20, 1993, at the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. The final two items are rectangular plastic pin-back badges from the 1990 U.S. Open Championship held June 11-17 at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. One badge is designated USGA Official with serial number 00158, and the other is designated USGA Guest with serial number 00446. Both badges feature the green Medinah Country Club crest. Mike finished 2nd in this event after falling short in a marathon playoff to Hale Irwin. A Letter of Provenance signed by Mike Donald will accompany this lot.
The Mike Donald Collection
Earning a moniker such as 'Iron Mike' in the game of golf isn't easy. Mike Donald did during the 1980's and early 1990's, notching nearly 300 made cuts on a PGA Tour - often in void of the glitz and glam of the game's current pro climate. Some will recognize his name from being a regular on the early 1990's PGA Tour Pro Set trading card checklists - even twice in 1991, earning a 'Statistical Leader' card for his 401 birdies the season prior. 1990 would be a year in which Donald would find himself under the brightest of lights, matching a 50 year old record with "the round of his life" 64 (Lloyd Mangrum) to lead The Masters after Thursday - en route to falling back in the pack for 47th. Just months later he would be on the wrong end of the US Open duel with Hale Irwin in the toughest test of golf. These major trials and tribulations were however sandwiched with great success. Donald earned the dually as difficult "PGA Tour Winner" title on July 16, 1989 when he closed the deal at the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic in Playoff win over Tim Simpson and Hal Sutton. Donald also earned winner's medals at the 1984 JCPenney Mixed Team Classic with Vicki Alvarez and the 1990 Sazale Classic with Fred Couples. Through it all, Donald has stayed humble - with many fond memories of decades ago on the Tour. This offering we proudly feature items from The Mike Donald Collection.
