Open Champion Alex Herd's 1904 News of the World 3rd Place Bronze Medal
The Professional Golfers' Association, established in 1901, predated the PGA of America by 12 years and conducted business out of The Belfry golf resort in England - the governing body's early logo in relief on Alex 'Sandy' Herd's 1904 News of the World third place bronze medal. The match was played at Royal Mid Surrey Golf Club, Richmond, England. Alex 'Sandy' Herd defeated Harry Vardon, James Braid, and Fred Collins before falling to eventual winner JH Taylor in the semifinals. Coincidentally it would be the same Vardon and Braid in which Herd bested by a single stroke to win the 1902 Open Championship.
The 1904 News of the World Match Play was only the second News of the World Match Play tournament ever played. Each match was contested over 18 holes, except for the final which was over 36 holes. Medals from Open Champions, this sourced from the UK, are anything but readily available with the time to acquire being now.
