Original 1945 Byron Nelson Sports Cartoon Art Drawing by Bill Simpson for Oakland Post-Enquirer
This original pen and ink sports cartoon drawing on heavy wove paper is executed by artist Bill Simpson for the Oakland Post-Enquirer, dated 1945. The composition is organized into three distinct narrative panels. The top-left panel features a caricature of professional golfer Byron Nelson at the Richmond Open, humorously depicted selling umbrellas as a sideline. The top-right panel focuses on horse racing, specifically the gray horse First Fiddle owned by Mrs. E. Mulrenen. The lower central panel illustrates a boxing scene with ex-Marine manager Kayo Janic and heavyweight Jay O'Brien, accompanied by text detailing their World War II service in Bougainville and Guam.
