Rare 1923 US Open at Inwood CC Official Program - Bobby Jones' 1st Major Win!
Seven painstaking years it took Bobby Jones to capture his first major championship at 21 years of age. For all but this lot's consignor and one other collector its been a much longer journey to track down that historic event's program here. How scarce is this program in which Bobby Jones collectors long thought of as a mythological entity? A scant two examples have been offered to the public. Sporting cover art that includes flappers intermingling with gentlemen golfers on the Inwood Country Club grounds in front of its stately and distinct pillared clubhouse confidently standing in Long Island, NY is the ephemeral enigma. A choice illustrative scene for the prosperous 'roaring (19)20's.' This is the far superior condition example of the two mentioned, with full contents intact and excellent eye appeal resulting from a professional restoration reattaching the front cover as depicted.
“Bobby Jones is the greatest of them all. Man, it was a bonny shot! I’m proud to have stepped so close to him,” Scottish runner-up Bobby Cruickshank marveled after the Jones' victory in the 18-hole playoff in front of approximately 8,000 spectators and Jones fans alike. Cruickshank was referring to Jones' brave go-for-green second after his drive careened into the rough. Bonny in Scottish means beautiful, attractive or pleasing.
Prior to the 90th and final hole of the tournament, the two Bobby's they were all tied up. With no regard for the cut of grass he was sitting in or the pressure of the moment, the major-less Jones achieved heightened contact with the ball and accuracy to match. Indeed on the green the ball came to a stop. With his competitor's approach landing in the bunker the conclusion was all but decided. There are 36 two-sided pages inside the front and back covers of this publication chronicling the event's leadup. It took seven years to win the first major for Jones. At the end of seven years later he had a lucky 13. It started at Inwood CC in Long Island, NY York and Jones' major programs start with his very first - in this offering.
