Rembrandt van Rijn, The Golf Player, Posthumous Etching
This framed intaglio print is a posthumous etching titled The Golf Player after the original 1654 composition by Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669). The scene, also known as Het Klosbaantje, depicts an interior view of a man resting at a table while another figure outside engages in kolf, a precursor to modern golf. The print exhibits the characteristics of a late 19th-century impression, including significant plate wear and a softening of the fine etched lines. The work is printed on paper that has toned to a uniform yellowish-cream color. A brass-tone nameplate on the front of the frame is inscribed REMBRANDT 1606 - 1669. The reverse features an adhesive paper label titled Certificate of Authenticity from Dublin-Kahn Art Gallery, which lists the artist as REMBRANDT, the title as THE GOLF PLAYER, the medium as ETCHING, the publication date as LATE 1800s, the country of origin as AMSTERDAM, and the size as 4 5/8" X 6 1/2". The label bears an authorized signature reading Evelyn Dublin. The print is presented in a dark gray mat within a decorative gilt wood frame featuring a foliate and beaded relief pattern.
