Royal Doulton Rare Large Chas. Crombie Rules of Golf Series Ware Two-Handled Pedestal Bowl Loving Cup
Royal Doulton crafted their 'Series Ware' line from approximately 1911 to 1932 and now, well over a century later, this stunningly massive loving cup bowl remains the unicorn piece for many advanced pottery collections. While the Sprungs' Decorative Golf Collectibles price guide valued this as one of the most expensive items to obtain (when you can) between $5,000-7,000, the only public sale found in a quick search revealed it could go higher. The UK-based Lyon & Turnbull auction house fetched 7,768...British pounds for a like example of this same rare ceramic - equating then to $13,594 (2005 approx. 1.75 pound to dollar conversion)!
The towering and magnificent Royal Doulton porcelain two-handled pedestal bowl from the Rules of Golf series, featuring illustrations by Charles Crombie. The vessel displays transfer-printed and hand-colored scenes of golfers in 17th-century dress within a continuous landscape. Below the upper landscape frieze, the bowl is inscribed with the text: HE . HATH . A . GOOD . JUDGMENT . WHO . RELIETH . NOT . WHOLLY . ON . HIS . OWN. The interior rim is decorated with a matching landscape border. The bowl features two gilded scrolled handles and a gilded beaded ring above a stepped pedestal base with a dark green foot. The underside is marked with a printed Royal Doulton backstamp featuring a lion atop a crown over a circular mark with the words ROYAL DOULTON and ENGLAND. Also present on the base is the hand-painted pattern number D3395 and impressed marks including D and 10. Size 11" X 11".
