Three Golfing Volumes. Lang, A Batch of Golfing Papers; Borthwick, Royal Burgess; Layer, Simplicity. 1911-1987.
This lot comprises three individual hardcover volumes focusing on the literature, history, and technique of golf.
The first volume is A Batch of Golfing Papers by Andrew Lang and others, edited by R. Barclay, M.A., Captain of St. Andrew’s University Golf Club. This edition was published by M. F. Mansfield at 22 East Sixteenth Street, New York. The work is bound in publisher's red cloth featuring green printed titles and a stylized circular geometric design on the upper board. The text includes short stories such as The Devil’s Round and contributions from various authors associated with St. Andrew’s.
The second volume is The Chronicle of The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh 1936-1985 Volume II, edited by members of the 250th Anniversary Committee from material researched and prepared by Shearer Borthwick. Published by Alna Press Limited in Broxburn, 1987, this institutional history is bound in navy blue cloth with gilt-stamped lettering and the society's heraldic crest on the front cover. It is housed in a clear protective plastic jacket. The interior contains numerous photographic plates, including color images of the Society's formal dinners and black-and-white portraits of members such as James Cook and A. D. D. Mathieson.
The third volume is The Simplicity of the Golf Swing by A. P. Layer, published by L. Upcott Gill at Bazaar Buildings, Drury Lane, London, in 1911. This pocket-sized instructional manual is bound in red cloth with rounded corners, featuring white stamped titles and a vignette of crossed golf clubs above a pyramid of golf balls. The text includes instructional diagrams illustrating proper swing paths and circular movement.
