Three (3) 1900 Cope's Golfers Tobacco Cards - JH Taylor/Professor Tait/The Parson
Here we have three turn-of-the-century Cope's Golfers cards No. 28, 38 and 44 - Professor Tait, John (JH) Taylor and The Parson cards respectively. These cards were packaged inside Cope Bros. & Co. Ltd. brand tobacco products and served not only to get the consumer to keep buying the product, but also as reinforcement for the packaging itself. Taylor painted in his red captains coat, a member of the Great Triumvirate and a top card of the set. The other cards in that set include artistically depicted golf scenes by George Pipeshank such as A Bad Lie, Missed the Globe, and The Tee Shot. Notable golfers such as Tom Morris Sr and Tom Morris Jr, Alex Herd, J. H. Taylor (offered here), and F. G. Tait are also depicted. The back of the cards has the full list of the titles that make up the series. It is hard to come by any of these cards, having been a London based print in 1900. The cards are in fair condition with Taylor and Parson thin cut and a crease in the latter, but ready to display.
