Tiger Woods 1996 Sports Illustrated PSA 8.0 Newsstand Edition - First Cover!
Here is NEWSSTAND Tiger Woods' very first of 24 Sports Illustrated covers and likely the best cover photography of him, a close shot post swing - pictured at the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational en route to his first victory. This highly sought after magazine "rookie card" is a 7.5 by the discerning eye of grading industry leader PSA. Big numbers are being realized in this category, with Tiger leading he way in golf and bringing in a whopping $21,960 for this magazine in a PSA 9.8 grade via public auction in earlier this year!
The quickly growing graded sports magazine category received a large boost to its proverbial stock price when it was announced that CCG (CGC) and James Spence Authentication were joining forces to now grade, authenticate and encapsulate signed magazines. That was followed by PSA getting into the mix, grading and encapsulating magazines starting about a year ago. Less than 3 percent of magazines like Sports Illustrated magazines were newsstand publications, sans the subscription label or residue from it - aesthetical appeal and scarcity in one piece.
