Tom Morris St. Andrews Hickory Shaft Cleek w/Champion Tom Morris Paper Shaft Label
Boasting strong stamping on the head, along with the pronounced face groove pattern, this lot features a cleek associated with the great Open Champion Old Tom Morris. Narrowly defeated in the initial British Open Championship in 1860,"Old Tom" went on to win four of the first eight Open's (1861,62,64,67). On the heels of that success he served as Greenskeeper at St. Andrews from 1865-1904.He played in every British Open to 1896 when he was was 75 years old. An accomplished ball and club maker, "Old Tom" gained much acclaim for his design work with Royal County Down, Lahinch in Ireland and of course Muirfield to his credit. He passed away in 1908 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1976. It remains in good condition, with the aforementioned legible stamping.
