Trio of 19th Century Lithograph Advertising Cards and Die-Cut Figure Featuring Golf and Scottish Pastimes
This lot comprises a trio of late 19th-century American advertising ephemera items. The first item is a color lithograph trade card issued by Arbuckle Bros. of New York City. The front features a multi-vignette illustration titled Scotland, depicting traditional activities including the shot put, golf, curling, a sword dance, and a bagpiper. The bottom right corner of the illustration is marked with the printed text PAINTING COPYRIGHTED 1893 ARBUCKLE BROS. The reverse side, printed by KAUFFMANN & STRAUSS, provides a descriptive history of Scottish sports alongside an advertisement for Ariosa Coffee, instructing the consumer to GRIND YOUR COFFEE AT HOME. It is identified as No. 3 in a series of fifty cards.
The second item is a die-cut cardboard lithograph figure of a caricatured male golfer. The figure is depicted in a brown checkered tweed suit with knickers, a matching flat cap, a monocle, and a cigarette, standing beside a golf bag. The reverse is plain, undecorated brown cardboard.
The third item is a color lithograph trade card from the White Sewing Machine Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. The front features a young girl in a red jacket and yellow skirt playing golf, topped with a laurel wreath logo reading THE WHITE IS KING. The reverse contains promotional text for the White Bicycle and the White Sewing Machine Co. A purple retailer's stamp is present on the reverse, reading FOR SALE BY M. C. WELLS, Pianos and Organs, MAIN STREET, TOWANDA.
