1907 Wigton GC 9k Gold Captain’s Medal Awarded to Mr. J Harris

This medal was awarded by the Wigton Golf Club to Mr J. Harris in a 1907 Captain’s medal competition. An article in the May 6, 1907, Newcastle Daily Chronicle documents the qualifying event for this medal. The front of this 1 3/8 “medal features a golfer at the top of his backswing about to hit the ball pictured at his feet. Another golfer and his caddy appear in the background. The rear of the medal is engraved “ W. G. C. , Captain’s Medal , 1907, Winner J. Harris . “ The medal was finely crafted by William James Dingley of Birmingham and bear his W. J. D stamp on the rear. Also stamped 9.375 with a hallmark of an anchor and the letter g for Birmingham and 1906. Founded in 1905 The Wigton Golf Club was soon moved to a new Location on Station Hill in 1910. Thus this medal is a scarce item from the original course which gives it high collectability. This is in addition to its’ high intrinsic value of 9 grams of 9 carat gold. 1 3/8"
