Bobby Jones 1959 Sports Illustrated CGC 5.5 Newsstand Edition

Here is Bobby Jones' first, and only, Sports Illustrated cover depicted in his green members jacket with the clubhouse in the distance for the April 6, 1959 issue by artist Aaron Shikler. As noted on the cover, inside Jones previewed The Masters Tournament. The leader in magazine and comic book grading, CGC, gave this issue a strong 5.5 - impressive for an early newsstand issue printed only 5 years after the publication's inception.

The quickly growing graded sports magazine category received a large boost to its proverbial stock price when it was announced that CCG (CGC) and James Spence Authentication were joining forces to now grade, authenticate and encapsulate signed magazines. Less than 3 percent of Sports Illustrated magazines were newsstand publications, sans the subscription label or residue from it - aesthetical appeal and scarcity in one piece.
