Description

Bobby Jones Signed Dom Lupo Grand Slam British OPEN at Hoylake Print - Only One Known

Here is the only known example of Lupo's British Open masterpiece signed by Bobby Jones, Grand Slam winner and Augusta National Golf Club Co-Founder! Golf's undisputed king Bobby Jones incredibly signed this stunning close in-color depiction of himself en route to capturing what no one in the sport had before, The Grand Slam! Artist Dom Lupo brushed Jones playing from the fairway at the 1930 Open Championship at Hoylake approximately only six years prior to Bobby Jones' passing (a narrow window). This Dom Lupo 'Grand Slam' print was signed by Jones in blue ballpoint in the light colored sky, with an additional inscription of 'Best Wishes' to a gentleman named Bill Sturdivant from the then ailing Jones and resulting in a one-of-a-kind gem oversized 'Grand Slam' piece. Revered 'Golf Magazine' artist and illustrator Dom Lupo produced this work for the 1965 August publication's 'Grand Slam Commemorative Issue.' Lupo's tenure at 'Golf Magazine' spanned 25 years, chosen as the artist for a number of other high profile works in the sporting industry including to hang on the walls of the World Golf Hall of Fame. This colorful artist rendition of Bobby Jones' follow through in front of a thick gallery waiting with baited breath. Jones's stoic facial expression of intense concentration is locked in on the outcome of this shot, likely setting up for the next one already.

New York Sun sportswriter George Trevor said it best when he famously phrased Jones' four Major triumphs in 1930 as Jones "stormed the impregnable quadrilateral of golf." This event captivated the minds of most 1930's Americans whether they were golf fans or not, offering the opportunity to see one of the grandest moments in the Golden Age of Sport, Bobby Jones' accomplishment as the only player to win the pre-Masters era Grand Slam. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity #XX34076 comes with this lot. 22 1/2" x 20 1/2.
