This 1897 245 page book written by W. E. Hughes is
the earliest known club history per the
bibliography notation in The Game of Golf and The
Printed Word 1566-2005 by Donovan and Jerris.
This is a wonderful book with 8 printed plates and
36 illustrations
Among the plates and illustrations are a plan of the
Blackheath golf links, a card printed to
commemorate victory of the club in the
tournament held at St. Andrews in 1857 and
numerous trophies and medals.
The Blackheath Golf Club recently recognized its
400 year anniversary and is known as the earliest
known golf club in England.
As the earliest known club history this book is
highly valued by collectors and should be in every
golf library. The front free endpaper contains a handwritten ink inscription: "A Birthday Souvenir from his Wife to Francis Arthur Nettle with her best love & wishes Dec: 13th 1943." and a pencil notation reading "37/6".
