1904 St. Leonards And East Sussex Golf Club Sterling Silver Medal Won by R. M. J.
This Edwardian-era sterling silver prize medallion was issued by the St. Leonards and East Sussex Golf Club in May 1904. The obverse features the club name in raised lettering surrounding a central shield that displays six martlets, the traditional heraldic symbol of the county of Sussex. The reverse is elegantly engraved with the recipient initials R. M. J. and the date May, 1904, all enclosed within a detailed laurel wreath. The piece is fully hallmarked on the reverse with the Birmingham anchor, the lion passant indicating sterling fineness, the lowercase letter “d” for the year 1903, and the maker mark “J.F” for the noted silversmith James Fenton. This medallion serves as a significant artifact from the early development of organized golf in the South East of England. The medallion is in excellent condition. 1 1/4” diameter and 21 grams weight.
