1916 St. Leonards And East Sussex Golf Club CM Sterling Silver Medal Won by Lt. L.V E.J.
This sterling silver golf medallion, dated March 1916, commemorates the St. Leonards and East Sussex Golf Club. The obverse features a central shield displaying six martlets, the traditional heraldic device of Sussex, encircled by the raised-letter inscription ST. LEONARDS AND EAST SUSSEX * GOLF CLUB *. The reverse is decorated with a laurel wreath border surrounding the hand-engraved inscription: C.M. / S. L. & E. S. / March, 1916. The initials C.M. likely denote a Challenge Medal competition. Hallmarks on the reverse include an anchor for the Birmingham assay office, a lion passant for sterling silver, and a lowercase date letter “n” for 1912. The maker mark T, R, &, C o identifies the manufacturer as T. Reynolds & Co. This piece represents a fine example of early 20th-century British sporting memorabilia, specifically from the historic golfing region of East Sussex. This medal is in excellent condition. The surface shows minor wear and light tarnish consistent with its age. All hallmarks and maker marks are clearly legible. 1 1/4” and 21 grams weight.
