1927 Los Angeles Open at El Caballero Country Club Photographer Badge w/Ribbon
This month the Los Angeles Open Golf Tournament will celebrate its 100th anniversary. In 1926, the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce put up a $10,000 purse for the inaugural LA Open, the largest purse in professional golf at the time.
Here we have a rare badge from the second ever Los Angeles Open. The total purse was also $10000. It was played at the El Caballero Country Club and won by “Wee” Bobby Cruickshank. He won it with deadly iron play. His final round score of 67 at El Caballero was a new course record and it gave him a total score of 282 for the tournament and a six stroke victory.
The 5.5 ft. New York professional was heralded as the “hard luck Champion of the World’ . The nickname arose because he frequently came heartbreakingly close to winning major tournaments, with 16 top-10 finishes in majors but no victory. Notably, He was the runner-up in the 1923 U.S. Open to Bobby Jones
This is an uncommon badge from only the 2nd year of the historic Los Angeles Open and is highly collectible.
