A Trio of Early 20th-Century Golf Books by Harry Fulford, J. McAndrew, and Others. 1919-1922.
This collection consists of three vintage octavo-sized volumes focused on golf instruction and humor, all bound in publisher's green cloth.
The first volume, Golfing Step by Step by J. McAndrew, was published by The Mitchell Publishing Company at 116 St. Vincent Street, Glasgow. This undated work is dedicated to D. and W. Auchterlonie of St. Andrews and includes a frontispiece portrait of the author with a printed facsimile signature reading J. McAndrew. The text is profusely illustrated with instructional plates, including Plate LVIII showing a straight putt and Plate LX illustrating a stymie shot.
The second volume is Golf's Little Ironies by Harry Fulford, published by Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd., London, in 1919. The copyright page states First published 1919. Fulford is identified as the professional to Le Touquet Golf Club and the author of Potted Golf. The book contains illustrations by H. Elcock. An endpaper features a handwritten ink monogram consisting of the characters A and S intertwined.
The third volume, The Grip in Golf, was published by Golfers Magazine Co. in 1922. The cover features gilt-stamped lettering. The work includes instructional articles by British Open champions Harold H. Hilton and Jock Hutchison. The rear endpapers contain extensive pencil marginalia, including a note reading 25c / Better Speech Institute of Amer / Chicago Ill. / also at Gimbels / Benefits / accommodate / opus — opera and an inverted address reading 8214 Walnut / cards & letterheads.
