Antique Silvertown Mesh Pattern Gutta Percha Golf Ball
This is a vintage Silvertown golf ball, a significant example from the transition era of golf ball evolution in the late 19th century. The ball is constructed from gutta-percha, a rigid latex material derived from tropical trees, which replaced the earlier featherie balls. It features a molded mesh or lattice pattern consisting of intersecting vertical and horizontal lines that form a grid of square cells across the entire surface. This design was an intentional development in aerodynamics intended to improve the ball's flight compared to smooth-surfaced predecessors. The surface is characterized by a dark, weathered patina with remnants of white residue settled into the recessed areas of the grid. Within the molded grid, the ball bears two lines of impressed uppercase characters. The top line reads SILVER and the line below it reads TOWN. These marks identify the manufacturer as the India Rubber, Gutta Percha and Telegraph Works Co. Ltd, based in Silvertown, London.
