Bernard Darwin Letter Signed to William Roughead, May 22, 1944

Presented here is an autograph letter signed (ALS) by English golf writer Bernard Darwin, penned in ink on a single folded sheet of printed stationery, front and back. The printed header at the top reads "COUNTRY LIFE / 2-10, TAVISTOCK STREET, / COVENT GARDEN, W.C.2." along with printed telegraph and telephone details, crossed through with handwritten pen marks. Darwin has inscribed his residential address at the upper right: "Gorringes, / Downe, / Kent." and dated the letter "22. V. 44". The letter is addressed to Scottish legal essayist and true crime chronicler William Roughead ("My dear Roughead"). Darwin outlines his wartime travel schedule for the British Council, noting: "If I'm alive & trains are still running I am to come up to Edinburgh on the night of June 5 to talk for the British Council to Poles & Czechs on June 7 or 8, and then to go on for them, I hope, to St. Andrews." He proposes a meeting, remarking that a trip to Edinburgh without seeing Roughead "(to say nothing of "tobacco pouch tanned from the skin of Burke the murderer") would be a sad waste". He further mentions that "One Edwin Muir is looking after this jaunt of mine for the British Council & will probably meanwhile know of my whereabouts & movements." Darwin concludes the letter with "Yours sincerely / Bernard Darwin". A spectacular piece. James Spence Authentication has reviewed this signature and a JSA ALOA will accompany this lot.
