C. 1883-95 Langley Mill Ceramic Golf Theme Tobacco Jar Humidor
Here is an exquisite example of a circa 1883 - 1985 piece of Langley Mill Ware, made in England. This English glazed ceramic tobacco jar or humidor features a two-tone color scheme, with a dark chocolate brown body and a dark forest green band at the base. The jar was hand decorated in the 19th century by either Mary Goodyear (1856-1941), George Parkinson (1864-1938) or Eleanor Daisy Calvert (1874-1925) with several cream-colored silhouette figures depicting golfers in late 18th century sporting attire, including flat caps and knickerbockers, shown in various poses such as swinging a club, putting, and carrying golf bags. The piece includes a matching ceramic lid equipped with a three-armed metal compression clamp mechanism and a central screw knob. The underside of the jar features an unglazed terracotta-colored base with Langley Ware - English markings. To the right, the word England is incised above a lowercase letter c and the number 208. The interior of both the jar and the lid are finished in a dark brown glaze. An extraordinary piece sure to attract lots of attention. Approximately 6” tall x 6” wide.
