Chick Evan's 1932 Western Union Telegram to Jerome D. Travers
An original Western Union telegram dated September 1, 1932, sent from golfing legend Charles Chick Evans Jr. (1890-1979) to fellow Hall of Fame golfer Jerome D. Travers (1887-1951). The telegram was sent from Chicago, Illinois, and received at the Western Union office located at 229 Glenridge Ave., Montclair, New Jersey. The recipient information and message are typed onto paper strips and pasted to the form. The recipient is listed as Jerome D Travers at 156 Walnut St Montclair NJ. The message reads: SEE YOU MONTCLAIR SEPTEMBER EIGHTEENTH WARMEST THANKS FOR GOOD WISHES BEST WISHES TO YOU ALWAYS FROM YOUR OLD FRIEND= CHICK. This correspondence captures a personal exchange between two of the most dominant amateur golfers of the early 20th century. Travers was a four-time U.S. Amateur champion and the 1915 U.S. Open winner; Evans was the first person to win both the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in the same year (1916). Old friends and foes they were with Travers defeating Evans for the 1912 USGA Amateur Championship. Travers in 1932 was President of the New Jersey Amateur Golf which held that year’s event at the Upper Montclair Country Club.
