Circa 1875 Robert Wilson St. Andrews Cleek with HCS Head Initials
Here is a quality club from a quality maker in Robert Wilson and not Robert Black (R.B.) Wilson, both out of St Andrews. The 1875 date would put Wilson at 27 years old. The original owner's initials "HCS" can be fount on the crown of this head. The stamping is legible, yet gets lighter and more shallow as it reads left to right. The short, long head design is indicative to the time period. Robert Wilson was a famous cleek maker from St. Andrews. Robert’s father was born in Glasgow about 1817, and was an ironmonger and this is where Robert learned the skill of club making. Please inspect photographs for an in-depth condition report. 38"
Golf Club Historian and Author, Pete Georgiady, has reviewed this lot and approves of this description. Pete, along with Dick McDonough, co-authored "Great Golf Collections of the World" and while doing so personally examined and photographed many of the fine clubs owned by Will Roberto being offered here.
