Here is a first edition of the seminal historical work on golf, compiled and edited by Robert Clark. This volume is bound in the publisher's original green cloth with decorative gilt-stamped typography and a central vignette on the front board featuring crossed long-nose golf clubs and a thistle motif beneath a crown. The spine features gilt lettering and the publisher's imprint at the tail. The title page is printed in red and black ink within a highly decorative woodcut-style border featuring cherubs, floral urns, and the golf mottos "FAR & SURE." The imprint reads "EDINBURGH PRINTED BY R. & R. CLARK MDCCCLXXV." The text is printed on heavy cream paper and contains numerous black and white illustrations, including decorative borders composed of golf clubs and balls, and various woodcut landscapes and scenes related to the history and play of the game in Scotland. This work is widely recognized as one of the most important early histories of the sport, collecting various records, poems, and historical accounts of the game from the 15th century onward.
